Rottweiler Training Tips for Your Home
Rottweilers are some of the best dogs around and of course that is a personal opinion but it’s important to ensure they are properly trained. Here are some basic rottweiler training tips for your home.
One of the fastest ways to create problems with a new dog is to not establish boundaries within your home. Some owners make the decision early on that their dogs will have free run of the entire house and can pretty much sit, lay, or sleep anywhere he desires.
This may be a fun thing to do when the dog is a puppy but it will quickly turn into a problem that you don’t want to manage as your dog gets older. There are many rules that you can apply that will help you to have a better behaved dog but we are going to cover just a few.
Define Relief Areas Outside
1. House Training-House training your Rottweiler is quite obvious and something that everyone wants to do as soon as possible but it’s actually outside that we want to talk about. Teach your dog to relieve himself in specific areas. In other words, do not allow your dog to freely go anywhere in your lawn or backyard. This is easier to do if you consistently take your dog to a set area after meals and also teach him to go on command. This will help to make this task much easier.
Beds and Kitchens Should Be Off Limits
2. Off Limit Areas-There are many areas in a home that are normally classified as off limits by many owners but others treat their dogs more like kids and allow them to go anywhere. One such area should be the bed. It is not uncommon for dogs to show extreme dominance when it comes to their sleeping areas and this can certainly apply to your personal bed. The fastest way to avoid this problem is to never start. Provide your dog with a comfortable dog bed and he will be just fine.
The kitchen should also fall into an area defined as off limits in most cases. First of all, not too many family members or friends are comfortable with dog hair floating around food but that’s for a different topic. The kitchen is a place with food, and by controlling the food area, you are helping to control your dog. Some of the most undisciplined dogs around are those that are fed at the table and steal food from counter tops. These dogs generally don’t respect your authority and it’s partly because you did not set the appropriate boundaries when they were young.
Enter Doorways Before Your Dog
3. Entering Doorways-One of the often unrecognized ways for a dog to show their dominance is for them to burst through doors before you. It doesn’t really matter if it’s an internal door or one that leads to the outside. You should always ensure that your dog follows and that he understands your position as pack leader. If your dog is used to rushing out the door first, give the sit command and close the door each time he gets up without you releasing him. Eventually, he will learn that he must wait for you to go first before calmly following.
