Dog Training Tip #1-Do Not Repeat Commands

One of the big mistakes that many dog owners make is in repeating basic obedience commands over and over.

If you give your dog a command such as “sit, stay, or down,” the goal is to get him to complete the action without repeating the command multiple times.  If you do tell your dog to “sit” three or four times before he responds, it will not take much time before he is tuning you out completely and not responding at all.

Therefore, it is very important that you ensure your command is followed.  Sometimes, that could be as simple as stepping in front of your dog so that he is completely focused on you and realizes what he should be doing.  At times, you may even need to pull up on the lead or apply a light pressure to get him to sit.

Whether you opt to regain his attention, apply a little pressure, or start the process all over again, choose one of these options before repeating your commands.

Exercise Your Dog Often

We all know that exercise is important for both humans and dogs but the difference is they are counting on us to make sure they get the opportunity to exercise.  Failure to exercise your dog several times per day can result in extreme boredom, anxiety, excessive energy, and more.  Most of these things can easily lead to bad behavior like digging up your yard, chewing, aggression, and of course barking.

Socialize Early and Get Massive Exposure

Many dogs owners make the mistake of thinking that socializing their dogs properly only involves getting them around other dogs.  Although this is an important part of the process, exposing your dog to people, cars, bikes, kids, strange noises, etc is equally important.  The more he becomes familiar with in life, the less likely those things will become a distraction later.

Avoid Correcting Your Dog After the Fact

One of the fastest ways to confuse your dog is to correct him minutes or hours after he has done something that you dislike.  Dogs are seldom able to make a connection between something he chewed to pieces 30 minutes earlier and what you are scolding him about now.  So, unless you can literally catch your dog in the act, it’s a good idea to simply wait until the next time.
